Welcome back to the Eagle Animal Hospital and Pet Resort blog! This week, we’ll be taking a break from our ongoing blog series focusing on puppies to return to another blog series where we have been discussing our dog boarding services. In part one of this short blog series, we began looking ways to prepare your dog for a stay with us in our pet resort. As your trusted dog boarding facility in Kansas City, Missouri, we want your pup’s stay in our pet resort to be as comfortable as possible. To ensure that your dog stays healthy and happy, while also ensuring the safety of other boarders, we have a few requirements for your dog. In part one, we talked about the importance of scheduling a temperament test prior to boarding your dog. We also recommended making a reservation ahead of time to reserve a spot for your dog in one of our studio, deluxe, or luxury dog suites. Today, let’s look at few more ways to prepare your pup for a stay at our state-of-the-art dog boarding facility. Keep reading to learn more!
Make Sure Vaccinations Are Current
One of the most important things you can do for your pet before boarding them is to make sure your canine companion is up-to-date on his or her vaccinations. In fact, we require it. We take all the necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of your dog, other boarders, pets in daycare, hospital patients, and, of course, our pet resort and pet daycare attendees. Vaccinations protect your dog from a slew of conditions and diseases common among dogs. Here are the required vaccinations for your dog:
As a pet parent, you are probably familiar with these shots, as you likely brought your puppy or rescue dog in to have a series of vet-recommended DAPP vaccinations. All canine boarders must be current on their DAPP vaccinations. DAPP is a series of vaccinations for Distemper, Adenovirus/Canine Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus, all of which are the most common diseases among canines.
Kennel cough is an extremely contagious respiratory disease common in dogs. Also known as canine infectious tracheobronchitis, dogs contract kennel cough from other dogs when placed in close proximity together in doggie daycare, a dog boarding facility, in obedience classes, at grooming facilities, or even at the dog park. It can be spread via air, direct contact, or by coming into contact with contaminated surfaces. Because this condition is highly contagious, all dogs boarding with us must be current on their kennel cough vaccine.
Rabies vaccines are part of your dog’s core vaccines that they will get as a puppy. They will also need booster vaccines at one year and again at three years. Rabies is 100 percent fatal to dogs and there are currently no treatments available. Rabies spreads to dogs when they come into contact with a rabid animal, which includes cats and other domesticated animals, as well as wild animals like bats. Dogs can spread rabies to other dogs and, unfortunately, this disease can be spread to humans.
In order for your pup to stay with us, they must also undergo a heartworm test that produces negative results. Heartworm, or Dirofilaria immitis, is a parasitic roundworm that is spread to canines through mosquito bites. Preventative medication protects your dog from contracting heartworms that cause heartworm disease. Talk with your Eagle Animal Hospital vet to learn more about our preventative care.
Other External and Internal Parasites
Along with testing negative for heartworms, your dog must also test negative for other internal parasites which would be found in a fecal test. If your dog has external parasites such as fleas or ticks, we would not be able to board them until they have been cleared for these.
