Dr. Jim Sparks is an esteemed veterinarian and the principal owner of Eagle Animal Hospital. From a young age, Dr. Sparks displayed a deep love for animals, and his unwavering passion led him to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian and eventually acquiring Eagle Animal Hospital. He embarked on a journey to provide exceptional veterinary care to the community, expanding the hospital's reach to Riverside, Tiffany Springs, and Liberty locations, ensuring that clients throughout the Northland region had access to top-notch medical services.

Dr. Sparks' commitment to creating a positive experience for clients is evident in his involvement in designing Eagle Animal Hospital and Pet Resort at Riverside and Eagle Animal Hospital at Tiffany. By incorporating the latest advancements in veterinary medicine and ensuring the buildings are modern and welcoming, he has successfully created an environment that prioritizes the comfort and well-being of both patients and their owners.

Dr. Sparks' journey in veterinary medicine began at the age of 15 when he was given the opportunity to work as a kennel attendant by Dr. Noyes, the former owner of Eagle Animal Hospital. From that moment, his dedication to the profession was solidified. Throughout high school and his undergraduate years, he worked as a receptionist and veterinary technician, gaining invaluable experience and knowledge.

In 1986, Dr. Sparks graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor's degree in Animal Science. He continued his studies at the same institution, earning his doctorate of veterinary medicine in 1990. During his time as a student, he completed an externship with the chief veterinarian of the Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska, further expanding his expertise in the field.

Since completing his education, Dr. Sparks has remained a valued member of Eagle Animal Hospital, devoting his career to the well-being of animals and the strengthening of the human-animal bond. His professional interests lie in companion animal internal medicine, where he constantly seeks to expand his knowledge and stay up to date with the latest advancements. Driven by a love for learning, he embraces the daily challenges and opportunities for growth that veterinary medicine presents.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Sparks is a devoted family man. He and his wife, Piper, have a blended family that encompasses three children of their own and three stepchildren. They share their home with a wonderful array of pets, including a German Shepherd named Ava and a kitty named Faith.

Dr. Sparks remains involved with various civic charities. He is also a strong supporter of youth athletics, reflecting his commitment to fostering the well-rounded development of young individuals. In his leisure time, Dr. Sparks enjoys being outdoors, playing golf, fishing, spending time at the lake and in Colorado.

With his compassionate nature, dedication to ongoing learning, and commitment to providing exceptional veterinary care, Dr. Jim Sparks continues to make a significant impact on the lives of animals and their human companions. MATTHEW SILVIUS

DVM, Managing Partner

Dr. Matthew Silvius is a dedicated veterinarian who has made significant contributions to the field of veterinary medicine in the Kansas City area. Inspired by his early interactions with farm animals, he developed a passion for helping animals and embarked on a journey to become a veterinarian. Growing up on a farm in Lathrop, Missouri, he gained valuable experience and knowledge that laid the foundation for his future endeavors.

With his commitment to providing exceptional veterinary care, Dr. Silvius played a crucial role in expanding Eagle Animal Hospital's reach to the Tiffany Springs and Liberty locations. Through his involvement in the design and construction of these new facilities, he ensured that clients throughout the Northland region could access state-of-the-art veterinary care in comfortable and modern surroundings.

Dr. Silvius began his veterinary career at Eagle Animal Hospital, where his first job as a kennel assistant ignited his passion for veterinary medicine. The established culture and support he received from his family members motivated him to pursue his dream of becoming a veterinarian. He enrolled at Missouri Western State University, where he pursued his undergraduate studies in Biology and excelled academically, earning a place on the Dean's list.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Silvius continued his education at the prestigious University of Missouri's College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2007, he graduated magna cum laude with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, receiving recognition for Excellence in Dermatology. Driven by a desire to provide the best care possible to his patients, he has consistently sought to expand his knowledge and skills in various areas of veterinary medicine.

Dr. Silvius' professional interests revolve around furthering the expansion of Eagle Animal Hospital and pushing the boundaries of veterinary medicine. He actively seeks out the latest advancements in medical techniques, equipment, and treatments to provide the best possible care to his patients. By staying at the forefront of veterinary knowledge, he ensures that Eagle Animal Hospital remains a leader in the field, offering advanced and comprehensive medical services. In recognition of his contributions to the profession. Dr. Silvius is currently the president of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association and is a member of the Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association. He is also an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Silvius cherishes the time spent with his family. He and his wife, Dr. Margaret Silvius, share their home with their two children; Hubert, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Sunny a domestic shorthair, and Patty, the British Shorthair. In his free time, Dr. Silvius enjoys working on outdoor projects, following state and local sports, and watching his kids play sports.

As a compassionate and skilled veterinarian, Dr. Matthew Silvius continues to make a positive impact on the lives of both animals and their owners. SCOTT C. READ

DVM, Medical Director, Chief of Surgery

Dr. Scott Read is a dedicated and compassionate veterinarian with a passion for surgery and a deep love for animals. From an early age, Dr. Read knew that his calling was to help and care for animals in need. His journey towards becoming a veterinarian began during a memorable Boy Scout outing, where he witnessed a veterinarian demonstrating how the heart worked using a clever door-opening exercise. It was in that moment that his passion for veterinary medicine was ignited, and he knew that he wanted to dedicate his life to the well-being of animals.

As a high school student in Savannah, MO, Dr. Read eagerly volunteered at a local clinic, where he started by cleaning kennels and walking dogs. His dedication and enthusiasm were quickly recognized, and he worked his way up to become a veterinary assistant while pursuing his undergraduate studies in biology and chemistry at Missouri Western State University. In 1997, he successfully completed his undergraduate studies, laying the foundation for his future veterinary career. In 2001, he proudly earned his doctorate of veterinary medicine at the University of Missouri's College of Veterinary Medicine, solidifying his expertise and embarking on a remarkable journey as a veterinarian.

After graduation, Dr. Read returned to his hometown to practice at a clinic in St. Joseph, MO, where he honed his skills for five years. In August 2006, he joined the esteemed team at Eagle Animal Hospital & Pet Resort, where he continues to make a positive impact on the lives of countless animals and their devoted owners.

Dr. Read is a respected member of several professional associations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, and the Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association. He remains committed to staying at the forefront of advancements in veterinary medicine, particularly in the fields of dentistry and surgery.

With his extensive experience and expertise, Dr. Read is available at Eagle Animal Hospital to perform advanced soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. His proficiency includes complex procedures such as TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) surgeries, Patellar luxation repair, fracture repair. Additionally, he is skilled in other advanced surgeries and performing minimally invasive procedures using laparoscopy or endoscopy, providing pets with less invasive and faster recovery options.

Alongside his family, he shares his home with two beloved dogs: Sully, a Cavalier mix, and Ramona, a Cairn Terrier mix. In his free time, Dr. Read enjoys attending sporting events, cheering on his children in their own athletic pursuits, and indulging in the cinematic world or experimenting with new recipes.

Dr. Scott Read continues to exemplify the highest standards of veterinary care, blending his expertise, compassion, and genuine love for animals to make a positive impact on the lives of countless pets and their families. Heather White

DVM, DACVIM, Internal Medicine Specialist

Dr. Heather White grew up in Columbus, Ohio, in an adventurous and entrepreneurial family. She was insistent from the age of five that she would be a veterinarian one day. Remaining true to her passion, she attended college at the University of Dayton then graduate school at The Ohio State University. There she served as class vice president, received the internal medicine award, and graduated magna cum laude. After a 1-year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Purdue University, Dr. White completed her 3-year residency in Internal Medicine at Texas A&M University. She became a board-certified internal medicine specialist in 2013 and joined the Eagle team in 2023.

Dr. White is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Society for Comparative Endocrinology, and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. As a servant leader she has chaired the Advanced Continuing Education, Specialists in Private Practice, and Membership Committees of the ACVIM. She has been locum faculty at several veterinary teaching hospitals, acted as a thought leader in the veterinary industry, and is a national speaker on practical and cost-conscientious internal medicine.

Dr. White’s professional interests include ultrasound, endocrine diseases (especially diabetes), and gastrointestinal disorders to name a few.

When she isn’t influencing change and promoting new ways of thinking in her industry, she’s spending time with her husband, Corey, their two daughters, Evelyn and Avery, and their cat Kit, and dog Stubbs. She enjoys traveling, listening to audiobooks, playing ice hockey, and watching football and golf. Her hope is that her daughters will see that thoughtfulness does indeed affect lasting change, and that it will empower them to one day carry a torch for their own adventures and passions.

STACEY NICKELL

D.V.M.

As a young child drawn to both science and animals, Dr. Stacey Nickell knew she wanted to become a veterinarian. At 15, she began volunteering at a local veterinary hospital and was on staff by the following year. The veterinarian there became her mentor and encouraged her to pursue her dream.

Dr. Nickell completed her undergraduate studies in Biology at Bradley University in 1999. She pursued her graduate studies at the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine graduating magna cum laude in 2003.
The first hospital she worked at as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine was the same where she got her start as a teenager.

“I was happy to find a career that integrated science with my love for animals,” she says.
Dr. Nickell joined our team in May of 2004. She is a member of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. She is also a member and treasurer of the Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association. Her professional interests include ophthalmology, internal medicine, dentistry and dermatology.

Dr. Nickell is Fear Free Certified©.  She says, “I am excited to implement new strategies to ensure your pets have the best experience possible during their visit.” If you have concerns about an upcoming visit please call to discuss this before the scheduled visit.

Dr. Nickell enjoys being a veterinarian for many reasons. “I enjoy forming relationships with clients and helping them to make the best decisions for their pets,” she says. The challenge of diagnosing a patient and the diversity of cases she sees in a day also keep her passionate about her career choice.

At home, Dr. Nickell has a Boxer named Jasmine. She enjoys running, yoga, reading, traveling, and spending time with her husband Jason (also a veterinarian) and their three young children – Brooke, Will and Paige.

MARA REYNOLDS

Dr. Mara Reynolds attended the University of Missouri for her undergraduate degree in Animal Science as a Pre-Vet scholar. She also attended the University of Missouri earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, graduating in 2019. D. Reynolds moved to Overland Park when she was a child and considers it her hometown, but has also lived in California, Arizona, and Missouri. She grew up riding and showing horses in the hunter/jumper ring consistently has been surrounded by animals/pets. Her childhood dog, Jet, was her best friend throughout middle and high school. “Jet was a huge inspiration to me and inspired my desire to help people and their pets.

Before becoming a veterinarian, Dr. Reynolds volunteered during high school at Wayside Waifs and Chain of Hope, both rescues facilities in the Kansas City area. In undergrad, she worked at the Central Missouri Humane Society as well. “I always knew I wanted to combine my passion for science and animals and be a vet.”

Dr. Reynolds is a member of the Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association, the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and is Fear Free Certified. She enjoys internal medicine, dentistry, nutrition, behavior, and routine surgery.

“Forming lasting relationships with clients and their pets to better understand their needs and provide the highest quality medicine/care possible has been my goal as a doctor. Educating owners to be able to make the best decisions for their pets and their families has been the most satisfying part of becoming a veterinarian. ”

When Dr. Reynolds is not working she enjoys hot yoga, hiking, walking with her dog Ivy, spending time with friends, and exploring local breweries and craft beers. Ivy is a three-legged mix breed (mutt) that she adopted after her first year of veterinary school.

MOLLY BRIGGS

Dr. Molly Briggs joined the Eagle team in July 2020. She attended The College of William and Mary for her undergraduate receiving her degree in Biology Magna Cum Laude and the Dean’s List in 2013. She graduated from the school of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri in 2019. Dr. Briggs grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia. When looking back to what sparked her interest in becoming a vet, she remembers looking forward to taking her cat to the cat clinic with her family. “I have wanted to be a vet ever since she can remember. When I was younger, I remember playing “vet” at home by wrapping up my dog in bandages. The motivation to follow through with my dream came from fellow classmates once I entered into vet school. Seeing the love and passion they had for their patients and this field was always inspiring.” Dr. Briggs volunteered at the SPCA while in high school and worked as a veterinary assistant throughout college. She also worked at the Virginia Wildlife Center and received a wide variety of experiences with numerous species including deer, bears, raptors, and small mammals.

Dr. Briggs is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, and the Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association. After graduation, she completed an internship at Blue Pearl Specialty and Emergency Pet Hospital. Her veterinary interests include cardiology, emergency medicine, nutrition, and internal medicine. She shares with us, “Being able to diagnose diseases/conditions and give people answers and solutions to keep their pets healthy and happy has been the most satisfying part about becoming a veterinarian.”

In Dr. Brigg’s free time she enjoys movie night with friends, paddle boarding, Chief’s football, and exploring KC bars and restaurants. She recently married her husband Kenyon who is a corporate merger and acquisition lawyer. They have a Bernese Mountain Dog named Harper and Waffles, a tabby cat.

RAY POTTIOS

Dr. Ray Pottios, a native of the Northland, grew up in Liberty, MO and graduated from Liberty High School. Dr. Ray worked in a clinic in Fayetteville, Arkansas as an assistant while attending college at the University of Arkansas. He fell in love with the veterinary staff and family like atmosphere. This is where he learned what a career in this field could look like and solidified his desire to become a veterinarian. He also worked in the intensive care unit and emergency room as a student nurse during most of veterinary school.  Dr. Ray Pottios attended Kansas State University graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2022. He was awarded the Dr. Richard M & Pamela K DeBowes Professional Leadership Award 2022, the Dr. John S Koen Memorial Award for Swine Medicine and Surgery 2022, and the Dr. Robert E. Kind Memorial Scholarship 2021. Dr. Ray was also the Class President of the Class of 2022.

“I look forward to fostering an open communication relationship with pet owners and providing a tailored medical experience for every pet. I value my relationships with my pet parents and look forward to connecting with you and your pets so that we can work as a team to provide the best care for your pet.”

Dr. Ray volunteers with Kansas City’s Community Veterinary Outreach (CVO) organization where they provide free veterinary resources alongside with human medical doctors to help people and their pets who are experiencing homelessness receive medical care. He is also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association, Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians, and the Association of Avian Veterinarians.

Dr. Ray Pottios is interested in all aspects of canine and feline medicine and surgery, as well as companion exotic pet medicine and surgery. He enjoys treating small mammals such as ferrets, rabbits, and guinea pigs, and plans to become more familiar with reptiles and birds. He also has an interest in urgent care/walk in appointments as “I find it highly rewarding to help pets and their owners when their pet needs prompt medical attention.”  Dr. Ray also enjoys diagnostic imaging like, X-rays, ultrasound, and CT scans.  “I thrive off the ability to help people with their pets and working with pet owners as a team to provide the best care possible!”

When not working, Dr. Ray thoroughly enjoys the outdoors with his partner and their two dogs kayaking, paddleboarding, and hiking. They love to travel and explore new places and always make it a point to visit the local food and brewery spots. On the weekends you can find them working on home projects, socializing with friends, spending the morning at the market, or spending the afternoon on a walk or exploring local Kansas City food/hang out spots. They have two dogs, a Border Collie Mix named Nico and a miniature Australian Shepherd named Thea.

Dr. Rhodes

Michelle Rhodes

Dr. Michelle Rhodes is a Kansas City native whose passion for animals has led her to becoming a veterinarian.  As a veterinarian, she is honored to be able to provide preventative health care, manage chronic illnesses and perform lifesaving surgeries in this field.  She is grateful for her bonded client/patient relationships and continues to educate herself to be provide the best care possible.

Dr. Rhodes graduated from University of Missouri, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007.  She started out in private practice, where she practiced small animal veterinary medicine in the KC metro area.  After 5yrs of practicing, Dr. Rhodes became interested in further education within pain management.  This led her to becoming certified in Veterinary Acupuncture, studied through Colorado State.  Dr. Rhodes has been specializing in pain management ever since.

When not in the clinic, Dr. Rhodes is spending time with family and exploring “the forever expanding” KC area.  When needed, Dr. Rhodes will volunteer for The Humane Society of Greater KC spay and neuter programs that aid in community support and out-reach programs.

The Rhodes family includes 5 fur babies:   Vader the skeptical feline, Betty the lazy Pitbull, Lulu the cutest chug mix, Meeko the sly Bengal and Tweedy the handsome DSH.

ANDREA DELUKE

Dr. DeLuke is available to perform advanced soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries at Eagle Animal Hospital. She specializes in TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) surgeries, Patellar luxation repair, fracture repair, arthrotomy, among other orthopedic surgeries. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ross University in 2004. She completed her clinical training at the University of Missouri and then pursued a small animal rotating internship at Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty Center in Tucson, AZ. Dr. DeLuke continued working as an Emergency Doctor in Tucson for several years, and during this time she discovered her passion for surgery. Dr. DeLuke returned to the Midwest and completed a small animal surgery residency at Mission MedVet in Mission, KS.

Prior to the spring of 2019, she performed countless surgeries to save or improve the lives of animals as a staff veterinarian in the surgery department at referral hospitals in St. Louis & Kansas City. Dr. DeLuke is trained in soft tissue, orthopedic & neurologic surgery, with special interests in oncologic surgery and cranial cruciate ligament surgery. In her free time, Dr. DeLuke enjoys traveling with her two children. She has three dogs, two cats and a yard full of chickens.
